Carry on camping

Last year we were looking for a tent which would allow us to go on camping into our seventies (the triumph of optimism over both age and experience)We were looking for one with one large inner, to give space for bigger airbeds, and room for getting in and out of bed and getting dressed without needing too much contortionism. The Aztec seemed a good solution, at a reasonable price, and we were very pleased with it overall.

Putting it up was a bit of a tussle - we found it difficult to thread the long poles through the channels, but are hoping to get better at this. We also found that some of the roof hooks and zips were too high for us to reach, but this is the downside of having plenty of headroom, and we easily found taller campers to help us with this.

The room inside was excellent, and by removing dividing curtains we had a very roomy inner tent. The fitted groundsheet was great - made it much warmer and cosier, and the choice of 3 doors made it very adaptable. It stood up well to some wet weather.

What snags did we find? A larger tent is bound to be more difficult to erect, but this is worth it, as we spent much more time living in the tent that putting it up and down. One problem we have not yet solved is cooking. In our frame tent, we had a kitchen area, but cooking in modern synthetic tents is not possible. No problem in hot weather, but I am not sure how we will cope if we cannot cook outside. We would like to add a carpet, but I am still sorting out one that will fit, as there is not one made for this model. But then, half the fun of camping is the planning and browsing from the comfort of home.

Possible solution

We cook under the extension still outside but under cover.

Not tried this. but have seen one in action and could be possible solution. Keeps you outside but undercover. A carefully placed windbreak down one or both sides also helps.

Might be worth a look and thinking about. and its pretty cheap also.

Although coleman it is universal. we see one on the side not the front on an outwell tent don't recall the model sorry. but as its universal can be placed either front or side and usable on most tents.

Thanks :)
