My 6 year old was playing with this on our last camping trip and broke the handle off it. It seems like it's not as robust as it seems - oh well.
I was sent this little torch/charger to review (from http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/cat/Eco-Mobile.htm - the eco-mobiles accessories supplier). It's not something I would have bought because it doesn't seem like something I'd use. Having said that it's a neat little gadget and I'll be throwing it in the camping gear next time we go away.
The first thing that struck me was that it's smaller than I expected (smaller than my Nokia 6220 candybar phone) that's good from a storage point of view but I found it made it slightly awkward to hold when winding it. Perhaps I just have big clumsy hands (which given my lack of ability to type is not far off the mark).
Anyhow back to the review. In the box is the torch/charger unit, a universal cable to connect it to the device you want to charge and a set of converters for various devices.
The torch is great it has 3 LEDs on the front which give a good bright light. A minute of winding gave around 10 minutes of torch light from the rechargeable Li battery.
Using it as a charger, I was skeptical about whether it would charge my phone, it seemed too small and weedy. However I was wrong, I plugged the universal cable into the unit, found the adapter for my phone, connected the phone to the cable, turned the torch off and started to wind. Within a few seconds my phone flashed up its charging icon. As well as my Nokia I tried it with my wife's Sony Ericsson and my Sansa MP3 player all of them worked fine and were obviously charging.
There are adapters for mini and micro USB, phones, iPods and more (see the site for a full list of devices). The cable and adapters come in a little resealable plastic bag which you could easily misplace I guess, but it does keep them all together and tidy.
My only issues with the whole thing was the size of the unit itself and the winding handle, both of which I found a little small for my hands. Initially I also found it hard to hold because the charging cable was sticking out where I wanted to put my thumb, I then realized I had it in the wrong hand (I'm left-handed which is possibly why I held it that way round). When I swapped hands it was fine.
Being 'car campers' we're not the target market though I guess. This would be ideal for festival goers or backpackers who might be away from any other means of charging their phone. For them it could be a real lifesaver (or at least allow them to find their mates by the Pyramid stage). For that kind of use the smaller size would be a definite advantage.
Anyway it's a neat little gadget that will definitely become part of our camping kit from now on.
