Garmin Nuvi 760t
Prior to setting off to germany last year we decided after an outing with a borrowed TomTom one that it was worth the purchase for our trip and future trips. So started the long hunt for a satnar that was not only going to meet our needs.
I had two main requirments that i wanted to ensure i had on the unit.
1. Had to have europe mapping
2. Text to Speech
The requirment for europe is obviouse we were off to germany! the text to speech only came about after a trip out with the TomTom in london and we kept taking the wrong turn! why? well Joanna Lumley (i did say it was borrowed, but failed to mention the celebrity voice that was installed) Would say "Take the next Left) easy enough....... Not in a big city like london often you have 3 lefts all with 5mm's off each other! so that was that! i wanted "Turn left onto StHelens Road"
I wont waffle on about the options we looked at. this is a review not a comparison (I actually cant remember which one it was to be honest ;) )
The unit it self s pretty large, but its screen is very sharp and clear so i think the large unit to get the large screen is a bonus.
The menu system is very easy to follow and use, the main screen only offering two main options. View map and where to! small icons along bottem offer volume and settings.
So the main thing really is the mapping is it any good? well we did test it out before we went. but i think the best examply to provide is the first section of our trip to germany. This unit took us from our front door all the way to Koln Germany without a single issue. not only that! those words spoken "You Have arrived" were said right outside the main gate to our first campsite! Brilliant! We did have to adjust the route as she(satnav) was tring to take us via the channel tunnel we were sailing to dunkirk.
Text to Speech it really is very good it makes alot of difference when driving, allows you to concentrate fully on the driving and the signage as you dont need to look at the satnav at all. the only downside is the voice is a little electronic sounding and somtimes the pronunciation off some road names can be a little wrong often with very funny results.
The unit also has a traffic facility which means you have an extra aerial to stick to windscreen. This also works in some countrys in europe worked in both france and germany for us. I have read a few reviews about this system being very poor on any satnav that it is used. If you use it right though it is pretty good. ignore small delays they will usually be clear by the time you reach them. its just using a little comman sense really.
The FM transmitter facility which allows you to link to your car radio for directions i never really got to work. signal was to weak for me was not to interested in this anyway.
Bluetooth did not think i would use it. but really this is very cool! hands free calling all through the satnav display and speaker brilliant idea. oh and the text to speech will read your text messages out also :D
Where am i option is also very usefull. park your car up. turn the satnav off. and when you come back turn the unit on and it will direct you to your car. very usefull in an unknown loaction and cant find the car! we used this a few times.
So very pleased with the unit. covers every thing we wanted and so much more! highly recomended! (we use it often, just not locally)
