Been camping for longer than I can remember and have all manner of tent pegs in my tent peg bag(s)
Generally rock pegs tend to be my first choice with a variety of steel Vs for softer ground, including some huge ex army sand pegs if needs be! This kit has pretty much coped with most things and most tents, with a bit of careful double pegging on occasions
In 2010 I actually won 10 Deltas in a competion and they have been a great addition to my peg bag. I admit to being a little biased against plastic pegs (cheap ones bend, go brittle etc) but these have filled a gap in my kit I didnt realise I had. When they arrived I was frustrated at how much space they took up but with practice learned to sort of stack/nest them, compared to a regular peg they were always going to take more space I guess
The first time they were needed was while camping in July 2010, we were hit by a nasty storm of gales and heavy rain - if you were camping that week you will remember the storm, campsites in some parts of Wales were devasted
We were in a Dutch Pyramid (Dutch call them storm tents) and, other than the noise it felt fine. The wind was hitting the side of the tent so we were getting a bit battered, then the wind break was blown flat (despite guys)and it was clear the soil was getting really soft with the rain. Problem was the soil was a bit rocky and it was proving difficult to get any big V pegs in deep enough without damage. So, in went some Deltas. Being short and robust they didnt seem to find the rocks, being wider than some Vs they gripped the soft mud well. It was still a sleepless night but by morning things were calming down and we had survived unharmed - unlike many of our neighbours. The wierdest thing about them is they can hold real well but then just slide out of the ground quite easily (unlike some rock pegs I have struggled with). I am now really glad to have these in the kit bag
First heard of these on the camping forum and after hearing of some of the inadiquacies of some tent pegs in adverse weather i decided to splash out on a set.
These are large pegs and are really only for using on guy ropes due to the shape and design.
I now use these on the back of the tent and to peg out the canopy. they are ideal becouse you do not have any of the peg sticking up and they hold like glue. we have been through some really adverse weather and they have never budged.
Can not rate these pegs high enough ..... score out of 5 .... a big fat 6.
I first came across these last year. at first i thought they not only looked a little wierd but were also pretty large. It was just before we purchased our new tent when visiting a local store on a windy day watching the tents blown about. some were starting to lift! So i decided at that point when we purchase i will also invest in some of these. Ordering was simple payment via paypal (remeber you dont have to have a paypal account anymore!) and delivery was prompt. I only ordered 10 as i had decided that these were best suited to guy's as at every point would be overkill.
I first used them in march on a marquee that we had purchased was a great day out so decided to leave it. the following day a storm had picked up. A little worried I rushed out to take it down, It had held well untill this point but had noticed that it was close to being lost to the wind. so a little disapointed down she came. it was only when taking it down that I noticed that despite the high winds the pegs had not shifted in fact they had held so well the marquee was lifting because the guy points had started to tear on the fabric! (note marquee fabric unlike a tent is cheap and weak i dobt this would happen to a tent) The marquee is 3x9 so the pegs were holding alot of pressure from that wind very ipressed indeed.
The key to the succes is in the design. because the hook point extends out whilst the peg section enters the ground at an angle when pressure is applied it acts as a pivot so pulling on the ground at the lowest point and upwards rather than a standard peg pulling on the softer top ground and downwards. i.e. no ground mass to hold it in place. The other great thing about them is the top section is completly flat so no accidents when tripping so no loss of toe's! You do need a peg puller to pull them up though.
The only other thing worth noting is that i think you may have problems using them in very hard ground at which point you will need to break out the rock pegs... What another type of peg? hey! if you can have 3 tents or 3 bikes! then why not 3 types of pegs :) your tent costs you money in some cases alot of money why risk that investment on cheap pegs that come supplied that after one use end up sharing the shape of a bannana
Delta pegs
Yes we can certainly reccomend these pegs, a very good product
