Gelert Atlantis 5 Tent

Featuring the sewn in groundsheet, an all in one pitching system and two door entry, the Gelert Atlantis 5 tent is flexible, solid and ideal for any first time campers looking to try family camping. The large living area offers a place for people to socialise or alternatively can be used as a storage area. Additionally, the tent has glow in the dark double guylines which not only add to the stability of the tent but decrease the risk of someone tripping over the guylines.

What you get in the package
When you get the tent al nicely wrapped up and in its bag, you get the tent of course, a bag with the 3x 12.7mmfibreglass tent poles, and the repair kit, you also get steel tent pegs, that seem to be better quality for tents of this price range, and finally the bedroom separator, which is more like the normal curtain used on other tent dividers.

Pitching
The pitching instructions are sewn into the bag so you cant loose them and are of normal type assembly instructions, nothing special about the instructions really, pitching is really simple, lay out the tent, insert the 3 poles, that are not colour coded as all 3 are identical length and diameter, hook the pins into the end of each rod and then tension as desired. Pitching even without looking at the instructions was easily done with 2 people within 15 -20 mins, as the tent is a one pitch system when the tent is pitched all the inside bedroom area is done as well, the bedroom pod is separated from the flysheet by the means of a mesh material, this then keeps the inner correctly spaced from the flysheet. This is supposed to improve the air circulation.

Inside the tent the 2 windows have fully roll backed curtains to give privacy and to reduce light penetration, the curtains are held in place by 3 Velcro tabs. The bedroom pod area has to D shaped doors each with separate fly screens, this also helps some ventilation. The bedroom area will take 2 double airbeds with a little bit of room left over, so it would only be able to take 4 adults, opposed to 5 as stated, (I think this is the same with most tents). Between the doors there is a storage pocket system that has 4 pockets to store odds and ends that you tend to loose easily, lighters keys ect.

In the bedroom area there is 1 large ventilation window that has a fly screen built in, and this is the only ventilation point in the whole tent, the ventilation on the outside is done by a zipped and guyed flap that’s also held in place by Velcro tabs.
The tent also has an electricity point with zip closure and when open the point is under the storm flap that surrounds the base of the tent. Both of the doors use double zip types, so either door can be used as a porch when used with porch poles (not supplied) It would be also advisable to purchase a ser of port poles, as either door can take these, the doors come fitted with brass eyelets for this purpose
At the base of the doors the groundsheet is elevated to keep out draughts and water from entering below the doors.

Optional Extras
Extras that are also for available for the tent are a fitted living area carpet, an enclosed canopy for the front and the footprint groundsheet.

Overall impression:
The tent stood up to fairly strong winds even when on an exposed pitch, pitching is easy and packing away is easy, the build of the tent seemed very good even though there were large amounts of the thread off cuts inside the tent especially in the bedroom area, the bag the tent came in is large enough to take the tent poles and the footprint groundsheet making it one less bag to carry, the footprint groundsheet does help keep the cold air from rising and fits the tent nicely. The tent has a lot of good aspects but in my eyes 1 major flaw, its lack of ventilation, with it only having the 1 vent at the rear of the tent, even with this open and pointed directly into a breeze, the air inside the tent didn’t move anywhere near enough. In hot weather like the week I took the tent out, the average temp was around 18c to 22c, inside the tent was extremely hot and far to hot to spend any length of time in there and the ventilation didn’t do anything, but during windy weather, the tent was stable and draught free, and nice and warm inside, even if the storm skirts near the doors flapped a little to much, these could do with a couple of Velcro tabs on the insides of both doors.

With this tent being made by Gelert and also the same tent as the Hi Gear Blackrock 5, it could be an alternative to the Vango Icarus 500. The porch/canopy, for the Vango Icarus will fit this tent, as the porch dimensions are only slightly different.
