Full marks to Outwell again. The Trout Lake is without a doubt the perfect small/medium sized tent. The quality is very plain to see, good stitching, quality zips and a sensible design all around. Easy to pitch and always goes straight back in the bag with no fuss - room to spare in fact.
Mesh doors on all ports and that fantastic PVC ZIG which practically holds the tent down on it's own.
We have seen the other tents shaking around in moderate (40 MPH) winds, while the Trout Lake just sits there with barely a quiver. Not a single drop of rain has found it's way through her polycotton skin.
If there is a downside, it's the price and the fact that the (2009 and before) tent does not have a porch (resolved on the 2010 model)
So, you want a quality tent that you can use Spring/Summer and well into Autumn? Get the Trout Lake and you won't regret it.
To add an opinion ref the Trout Lake. Superb bit of kit. We have endured 2 harsh rain swamped camps; Breacons (08) & Lake District (09). Not a drop of H2O penetrating the outer shell - except when trying to go outside using any of the 3 entrances/exits. The shape (roll of the tent) means that any entrance/exit used when its raining will allow rain to come inside. I spent ages searching the net for a side extension canopy for the Trout Lake but only found the front extension. Found a site that said the Bear Lake side extension would fit - so I went for it. It works a treat. Survived this Easter's Lake District outing (Keswick) - very very wet and therefore soft ground to pitch on. The wind was quite gusty (and strong). Had to use storm pegs to ensure the side extension stayed put. But it passed the test. This was our first use of the side extension - hadn't read the instructions, therefore not quite a perfect erection; the rain & wind at the time of putting up reduced the refinement of setting up camp. But we were dry, could come & go without, very crucially, the inside of the Trout Lake getting wet and, when it stopped rainiing the extension could be rigged to hold 2 lines for hanging damp/wet clothing & smelly boots - keeping the inside of the tent liveable.
The Outwell trout lake, our 3rd Tent in 2 years. and i can assure you we will be sticking with this one for some time.
I first must say we purchased as a package from SK Camping who we found to be very helpfull and also offering very good deals. We paid £599 for the package which included The Trout Lake, Footprint, Carpet, Wind break and the front Extension (Not yet recieved on backorder due for delivery next week so no comments on that yet)
This was an end of season deal last year.
From the Outwell Classic range tents using Polly cotton instead of nylon. although the fabric is pretty heavy compared to nylon they offer much cooler camping when the sun is blazing! which after a trip round germany last year in the middle of summer we are certainly glad about! (we had to get up and out by 8am every day as the tempreture inside the tent after this time was just to much!)
The Trout lake offers 3 entry points one on the front and two to the side. all 3 offering good size windows that can be rolled up revealing mesh so air can circulate but bugs are still kept out. this is the same when you roll the door up you can leave the mesh completly down should you wish. Two corner windows also with mesh.
The tent features a fully sewn in ground sheet again helping to keep those creepy crawlys out along with the draft and cold. The carpet(not normally supplied but part of the bundle) really helps also to keep the tent warm under foot.
The tent itself sleeps 4 people 2 bedroom compartments that are joined via a zip so one can be removed to offer more living space if your only a couple. divider can also be removed to make one large bedroom. Both compartments feature low level windows wich is great when you get up in the morning you can check the weather outside without getting out your sleeping bag :)
Although a small living space for the type of camping we do it suits our needs very well. although being that our two children are both under 5 i think a family with older children may want more space.
To round up a well manufactured tent that is light cool in the sun and warm in evenings. We look forward to many years camping with this one.
