We have a small MPV, a Ford C-Max, which is a great car but when it comes to fitting all 5 of us in and the tent (the aircraft hangar sized tent) and all the sleeping bags, clothes, airbeds, toys, shoes and so on it doesn't quite fit it all in.
So we need a way to extend the carrying capacity of our little taxi. The options are pretty clear.

The trailer's big advantage is that it fits a lot more in both weight and volume wise. It's also from what I gather more economical than a roofbox. The big downside for a trailer from our perspective is that it needs a towbar, which we don't have. So that makes the trailer a lot more expensive.
That brings me to the roofbox. The big advantage to the roofbox is that it's cheaper than the trailer, even when we factor in buying roofbars. My worry with the roofbox is filling and emptying it. Getting up on top of our relatively high car and packing stuff into a plastic box seems a bit precarious, but then I guess others do it so it can't be that hard. I am hoping that once it's unpacked it can be taken off and used as a big storage box while we're camping. This might be a totally ridiculous idea. We'll see.
