If you are still venturing out under canvas in October then you are slightly mad hardier than we are. No matter how hardy you are you'll probably need something to heat your tent. Andy from The Camping Forum mentioned he was looking for a heater on twitter the other day which prompted me to have a quick look at what was available.
So it seems that tent heaters come in 2 varieties, gas and electric, no surprises there I guess. The worry I would have with a gas heater would be the kids burning them selves on it, but then again if you're camping this late in the season perhaps you've not got kids to worry about.
Obviously if you use an electric heater you need an EHU and might need to consider the amount of power that it will supply, meaning you're heater mustn't be too powerful if you don't want trip the power. There is an useful post here about EHU ratings and power.
The only dedicated electric tent heater I could find is the Outwell Fan Heater (pic left) you could of course get a cheap fan heater but you'll need to be careful not to trip the power as they are usually 3KW which will take you right up to your limit on an EHU.
Well I think that if I was buying a heater I'd go for the funky Coleman gas one (bottom left pic) as we don't use an EHU and it looks better than the other gas heater, although at 850W it's about half the power (6200 BTU, 1.8KW) of the other one.
Actually with that in mind perhaps looks aren't that important when it brass monkeys outside.
Halogen heater
If you have the EHU i dont think you can beat a halogen heater.
They give off lots of heat and light, are only 1200kw, are not hot to touch and if they are knocked over they instantly shut off.
They are available at lots of outlets eg.
