Our trip over the bank holiday was as part of a big family group (2 grandparents, 8 parents and 10 kids). Apart from the one caravan (I know I know what can you do) everyone else was in an Outwell tent. Ranging in size from our aircraft hangar to a little supposedly four berth. So here in descending order of size are the tents we were in.
Well the largest tent was our Sun Valley 8, as the name implies it sleeps 8, by which it means that if you are willing to be quite 'up close and personal' there is enough room to fit 8 people into the 3 inner tents, with 3 in each of the rear inners and 2 more in the one down the side. We however sleep 5 in it, 2 in each of the rear inners and 1 in the side inner. Outside the inners (is that an oxymoron?) there is acres of room, so much room that at one point on the final evening it comfortably fitted 16 people.
The next smallest tent was a Montana 6 which is (surprise surprise) a 6 berth. It has 2 inners pretty similar to the rear ones in our Sun Valley which also supposedly sleep 3, but which had 2 sleeping in each. It's a nice tent with a large living area and a side porch that means you can get out of the weather to get out of your shoes before you go into the main part of the tent. It has steel poles, unlike the other 3 tents which all have fibre glass poles that you bend into shape as you put it up. It was not easier (or harder) to put up and take down as far as I could tell. We put it up and took it down in tandem with the Sun Valley and they both took a similar amount of time and effort.
The third Outwell was an Oregon 5 (yes it's a 5 berth), with one inner sleeping 2 people and one sleeping 3. It's a similar design to the Montana 6 with 2 inners on one end and a largish living area in front of them. It's just proportionally smaller. It has a side entrance like the Montana, but it lacks the porch area. Both the Oregon and the Montana have front entrances which can be held up on poles if the weathers is good.
Finally the smallest of the four was a Casagrande L. This is a 4 berth but it's a lot smaller than the other 3, it's not really possible to stand up in it, and the central section is only just big enough for 2 people to sit in. So it's a different type of tent really. The poles make it quite heavy and so it's not suitable for backpacking or even putting on the back of a motorbike. It is fine on the continent where you can sit outside all the time but for the British climate it would get a bit depressing after an hour or two of rain. The others all have enough space to allow you to sit out the rainy weather and do other stuff, read, play games etc.
I think you could easily pitch 3 Casagrades inside the Sun Valley, to give an idea of the differences in size.
Outwell sponsorship ...
now that's a thought :-)
I don't think we convinced the caravaner to convert but you never know.
