here is an old saying about knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. For most things in life their value should be in proportion to their price, although we all know of cases where the price far exceeds the actual value. It's rare to find something with a value far in excess of it's price but the humble tent peg extractor is one such thing. They cost a couple of pounds and you can get them from almost every camping supplies shop. But they are so good for getting pegs out that they are worth far more.
A lot of people use a spare peg and that works fine, but it's so much easier with one of these little peg extractors. Given you have 20 or 30 pegs to remove if you have guyed and pegged down a big tent the benefits are multiplied several fold.
I can't really explain why they make it easier, is it the way you can wiggle the peg or perhaps the more ergonomic grip. I don't know, but I do know that having used one once I'd never go back to the spare peg approach.
This is one thing every camper should own. Pack it with your pegs and mallet and never look back.
