Campingaz Bleuet CV270 Gas LanternAs we've just had the longest day (and so shortest night) it seems a bit odd to be talking about lights, but I wanted to mention the new Campingaz Lantern we got just before our last trip. Mainly because it brilliant. It was a little odd to start with, I've never used a gas lantern before and so was not aware of mantles and what you have to do with them.

For the similarly uninitiated the the lamp has a fabric net 'bag' (called a mantle) that goes over the pipe where the gas comes out, this kind of catches the gas and glows when the lantern is lit. Fitting the mantle is a weird experience, you place it carefully in position as it looks quite fragile and then ... you set light to it. As it burns it kind of shrinks to fit and you are left with the mantle in place and ready to go.

Lighting the lantern is a little fiddly as you have to get a light to the middle of the light which is surrounded by glass, and then once lit you have to close the lid which is by then warming up a little.

Once it's lit the light is a lovely warm glow, not like an electric lanterns harsh light at all, that with the gentle hiss of the gas and the small amount of heat it gives off make it a really homely addition to our kit.

We hang it in the top of the awning using it's long handle and an S hook (I checked the heat coming out of the top first which is minimal and not going to damage the canvas). It gives a lovely light for sitting in the tent in the evening and reading or chatting. It's obviously no use for lighting in the sleeping areas or for the midnight trip to the toilets.

All in all it feels like a classic bit of camping kit (we had one when I was a kid) and we're really happy with it.

Ours lights with the press of a button

We have a Camping Gaz light (about 10 years old) where you hold down a button to light it (no fiddling trying to get a match inside it) - it's great. Guess these are still available.
