Have just been having a look at Hurricane Lanterns and wondering whether they might be a fun yet useful addition to our camping kit. They look great in a retro kind of way and would feel like a real proper old-fashioned camping accessory. They are not too expensive either at around a fiver. So are they any good? I just don't know.
I thought that perhaps they might be messy having to fill them with paraffin, but that seems quite straight forward. Paraffin is quite cheap at £3 / litre. The lantern and the paraffin bottle both seal up so no obvious reason they would be a problem. There is the glass to consider, but again treated with care that shouldn't cause any problems.
So am I missing anything? Do they produce much light? Do they create any heat? Are they issues with carbon monoxide to consider? I just don't know.
Perhaps I'll have to buy one and find out.
Heat
As long as the kids are made aware about not going near it then the heat is not a major issue, We use a Gaz lamp even though we use EHU, (Its a nostalgic thing for me!) like the sound, the smell and the glow lol reminds me of childhood camping. Like paraffin lamps the glass the the metal top gets hot, but on cooler nights inside the tent the heat is pretty good :) although outside this is lost. but the glow is just best! :) :) (Obviously im talking about a different kind of lamp and was only meant to talk about heat.. but hey i got carried away sorry)
