This is a concept idea from VW (or perhaps a design competition winner I can't really tell) but anyhow a couple of people on twitter I follow including @camprnews think it's neat but ugly. I disagree I think it's quite evocative of old style VW campers. I think it's more bugly than ugly.
Either way it's really quite innovative and would make a great camper. With those canopies opened up it gives lots of space to sit under (although in the UK you'd need sides too). The passenger seat that turns into stairs to get up into the top bunks is very neat (having had to clamber into those bunks in the dim and distant past I know how awkward it is). I'm not sure about the kitchen on the door but I think it makes sense. The swivelling front seats are a must have in any camper surely, in fact I wish we had them in our MPV. I guess the big solar panel on the roof is used to keep the batteries charged even when you are not travelling which is useful and it looks big enough to cope. Pity there isn't an integrated cycle carrier (like some Vauxhall Corsa's have) and the boot that was filled with chairs seemed a bit of a waste.
Anyhow I hope VW end up building one or something similar as they do look cool.
What do you think, ugly or bugly?
I think its more the animation and color schemes used that makes me think toy town. Put that to one side i think it looks great! very clever.. The way it lowers is great. and as you said the steps are really neat. Plenty of room inside the unit and the extra tent area gives usable space. (the question is can the unit be driven away leaving the tent area behind? or is it pack up every everything every time you nip out to the supermarket?
I would suspect though its another concept that either wont hit the showrooms or it will but all the cool neat things will be removed to keep the costs down.
Oh and the chairs this is the same as the current T5 only they come out of the rear door.
