Comfy camping chairs
10 Jun 09

We have a collection of camping chairs of the 'folds into a long tube bag' variety which includes three adult sized ones, one junor one and one childs one. They are all basically the same (except for the size) and are fairly comfortable. Our camping compatriots have 'deluxe' versions of the same sort of chair (pictured right).

They are described by Outdoor Megastore as follows:

An excellent new chair for those who are bit wider! (Ideal for camping outside McDonalds). Approximately 15cm has been added to the width of a standard chair so that comfort can be had by all.

This is a description which makes us all chuckle, but it has to be said they are noticably more comfortable than the adult ones we have. We were all set to get the deluxe ones but have decided that actually ours are comfortable enough for now and it would be silly to shell out £50+ for 2 more. When ours wear out and break we'll definately replace them with these more luxurious ones though.

The junior one we have, which is from Blacks (although I can't find it on their site atm), has a mesh seat. When they all got left out in the overnight rain while we were away in May it was the only one that was dry enough to sit on in the morning. A neat feature.

We have always gone for this style of chair for camping, long before the 'umbrella' type appeared.  The essential for comfort is that they have no bar under the knees.  They fold flat rather that into a tube shape, and usually fit in quite conveniently.  I still think they are better as dining chairs, as they are more upright, and also find they feel more stable.  The new ones are very comfortable to relax in, however, and I am not sure which we shall choose when we need to replace ours.
